This is a book rewiew of slam, written by Nick Hornby.
The book is about a boy named Sam. Sam is sixteen years old and loves skating. He got a poster on his wall of his idol Tony Hawk, a pro skater. Sam tells this poster everything every day about his life. His life is quit "OK" as i say in the book. His parents are divorced and he lives with his mum. Sam’s favourite topic at school is art. He loves to skate, and most of his spare time he spends on skateboarding. Sam’s mother takes him to a party, where he meets Alicia. They become a couple. Alicia and Sam are having sex with each other. When Sam was born, his mother was only 16 years old, and because of that his mum is afraid of Sam having sex. Because she doesn´t want him to become a parent too early. But that is exactly what happens. Alicia´s parents dont like it, they get upset and angry about the pregnancy.
So the question about abortion is there but they choose the keep the baby or Alicia choose it. They get a son called Rufus. Sam is scared of the future, becouse he thinks his life is going to be boring and that he will have less spare time for skating and friends. And this he is afraid of.
The main themes in the book i think is abortion, love and to be a teenager as contains sex, friends and other problems. I think the author is trying to tell us that we have to be careful about the choices we take during the teenager years. But also enjoy the years when you are a teenager, so don´t become a father to early.
Author´s writing was easy to read but some time you could fall out, because he was jumping back and forward in the future. I believe that this book is not the best I have read; it is closer to be the worst book. Another thing that is negative with this book is that some of the chapters are very long. Sometimes I feel that the chapter has reached its peak, but then it continues with some other stuff. I will remomend the book to people at the age of 14-16 years old because they will understand the problems and the questions about beeing a teenager.
I will give this book an attribute of 3 out of 6.
